Hello Dulan,
Nice to hear something from you. You named a lot of different kinds of Sri Lankan music, that sounds very interesting. I hope to learn more from you about it! Here in the Netherlands we have also different types of music like folk music, hiphop, dance- and house music. These are the kinds of music that we mostly listen here in the Netherlands. Some people who make folk music are Frans Bauer, Jan smit and Andre hazes.(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xR-hWde2YsY). The most populair hiphop artist here are Ronnie Flex, Lil’ Kleine and ‘De jeugd van tegenwordig'(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_swivbEsD50).
Also the most populair dance- and house music artist in the world comes from the Netherlands, like Martin Garrix, Hardwell and Armin van Buren (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IPYTxAHeR_o). This was some information about the Dutch music culture. I’m excited what you have to tell about your music culture!

Hey Dulan,
Very interesting video! It gives a good impression about your music culture. I have read that there are many different music instruments in your country. I would like to learn more about these Sri Lankan music instruments. Here in the Netherlands we don’t have music instruments which are really Dutch, but the music instruments which we use the most are guitar, piano, drums and the trumpet. I hope to hear something from you soon

Hello Max,

I like Martin Garrix’s music very much. Of course our country has so many musical instruments. There are percussion, string and wind instruments in Sri Lanka. First I’ll tell you some about percussion instruments. (drums)
Percussion instruments in our country are divided into areas like instruments of Central area, instruments of South area and instruments of Sabaragamuwa area which is situated in between central and southern areas in our country. The drum of  northern area is called “Yak Beraya”. It is made of the timber of a tree called “Kithul”. It is played using hands. It has a very big sound.
The drum of southern area is called “Geta Beraya”. It is made by the timber of Jak and Margosa trees. This is generally used in religious  functions. It can generate two sounds by the two sides. It’s left part is made with cow skin and the right part is made by monkey skin. This is also played with hands.
In sabaragamuwa area the “Dawlua” is present. It is made with “Kithul” timber. It is decorated with arts and brass stripes. It is played with a stick called “Kadippu”
The other drums are “Thammattama”, “Rabana”, “Bummadiya”, Udakkiya” etc. Enjoy this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWHfzPaJWqE

Hello Dulan,
The music instruments you showed me looks very nice. I never knew that there are so many Sr Lankan music instruments. Also very interesting to know that the music instruments belong to different areas in your country. Funny to hear that you know and like Martin Garrix’ music, do you also know other dj’s from the Netherlands? The Dutch music culture is a little boring, we don’t have typical Dutch music intruments and the music we often listen is music that’s written in english. The Netherlands is especially famous for it’s dj’s with their dance music. They go around the world to play at the biggest music festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival Miami and Sziget( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MxQ1HM8RKbY ). Now something about my experience with music.  I play the guitar for about 2 years and I really like it. Also I listen a lot to music especially to house music, Dutch rap and hardstyle, do you also play a music instrument? And what is the music you like an listen to? If you wanna know something else from the Dutch music culture, you can ask for it!
Max

I really like that dj music. Their dances are also interesting. I’m also playing guitar. But I’m not expert in playing guitar. But I like the sound of it. Mostly I like English songs, both classical and modern songs. My favorite classical singers are Elton John, Stewie Wonder, Madonna etc. And my favorite modern singers are Omi, Micheal Jackson, Justin Bieber, One direction and I like beatbox music of Pentatonix. I’m also in the school western choir.
I would like to know about the house music and raps in your country.

Hey Dulan,

Nice to hear that you also like dj music, I didn’t know that dj music is populair in Sri Lanka. I also like English music, my favorite English singers are Coldplay, Imagine Dragons and Passenger. Nice that you also play guitar like me, which songs can you play? Some songs I can play on the guitar are : Avicii – Wake me up, passenger – Let her go, Imagine Dragons – On top op the world. I’m gonna tell you some more about Dutch rap and House music. Lets begin with house music. Their are different types of house music like deep house and future house. Deep house is more the chill version of house music it has a nice beat and it is good music to dance on. A populair deep house dj is Oliver Heldens he has twelfth place in the top 100 dj’s world wide. His most populair songs are Gecko, Shades of grey and can’t stop.(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8EzfBYFU8Q0) Future house is the Harder version of house. It has a fast beat and it’s very good music to dance on, future house is mostly played at rave parties, But it’s also played in great clubs like in the melkweg Amsterdam. Some of the most populair future house dj’s are Tchami and Jauz (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p2cDjhA8sP4).
Now some things about Dutch rap. Dutch rap was not so populair until last year, two rappers named Lil’Kleine and Ronnie Flex made a song called “booze and Drugs”(drank en drugs). That song became really populair. Since that song the Dutch rap is really populair. their are some groups and individual rappers under a record label called Top Notch NL with this record label they havd created a new rap music called “new wave” some of these rappers are Lil’Kleine, Ronnie Flex, Bokoesam and SFB (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bSL2fLATxXg) they mostly sing about love, life and party.

Hi Max,

Thanks for details. DJ music can be seen in weddings and parties in sri lanka. I play songs like This Love by Maroon 5, Una paloma blanca and sinhala songs. Keerthi Pasquel is a well known guitar player in our country. There’s a singer called Clarens Wijewardena. In his songs many guitar parts can be seen.
When we go trips, we sing songs mostly playing a guitar and a drum which is made of metal with a plastic membrane. They are light music. They are also good to dance. We hold some parties called “Paduru” parties in night together with friends with candle light. That light songs are sung in those parties. Clarens Wijewardena’s songs are mostly sung in such parties with guitar.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x884FNTbd6I , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNaNg9lFS8I  ,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T7Qe02QbD4

Hi Dulan,
Those Paduru parties sounds very interesting I would like to know more about them. Can you also tell me more about the music that they make at those parties that you called “light songs”. We have been talking a lot about music, this is where the project between us goes about. But I would like to know eachother better, maybe we can talk about our lives. Like do you play sports, what are your hobbies and where do you live. And maybe we can send some pictures of our surroundings where we live, to give eachother a beter impression about our lives. Do you think this a good idea?

 Hi Max,
Sounds like life at there is very interesting. What did you mean by netflix? I heard that in Nederland there’s a fort. In Galle also there’s a fort made by dutch in ancient times. And  there is a dutch church in Galle fort. Most people in here go there in evenings and enjoy the beach and sea breeze.

In holidays we go to have sea bath. The beach in there is very beautiful. Do you have beaches?

 Heey Dulan,

Let me explain what netflix is, netflix is a online movie service, it is an application which you can download on your mobile, tv or playstation and then you can watch unlimited movies. You only need a account which costs arround 7 euros a month. In the Netherlands we don’t really have a fort like your country haves. Also I have something interesting to tell. In the small village where I live called Velserbroek, lies a stone in the ground with a text on it which descripes that our village is in city connection with Galle. Also we have streetnames in our village like Galle Promenade and Sri Lanka Bastion. I have searched for it and in the next mail I will explain why our citties are in partnership. Also in the next mail I will send you some photos from the streetnames and the stone.

 Hi
I think netflix is an interesting thing. We have learned in school that the Galle fort was made by the people of your country.
It’s a beautiful creation. There’s a big clock tower in there. It’s still working. Most of foreigners who come to our country are attracted to it. In Galle fort also there are streets called by Nederland names.

You have missed one thing. Do you have beaches in your country? Sri Lanka has a very long beach around the country.

Hi Dulan,

Sorry that I forgot to anwer your question. We also have beaches, the whole west and north side of the Netherlands haves a coastline. In the Netherlands we have very wide beaches. In the front of our beaches we have a line with dunes to protect our lowlands against the sea. My hometown is around 5 kilometer away from the sea, and in summerdays we often go to the beach to go swimming. I like the beaches in your country very much, they are really beautiful. Here are some photos from the beach and dunes which are close to my hometown.

 Hi Max,
Your beaches are very beautiful. Do you have parks in your town? In Galle there’s a garden called Anagarika Dharmapala park. So many people go there on weekends and holidays. There’s a children’s park in there. It is very popular among kids. There’s a canal near that park. There’s a bridge over it  called “Samanala” bridge. There’s a playground near that bridge. It’s also called “Samanala” ground. Most young people prefer to play football and cricket there.
